Sushi University

Could I get into medical school?

I want to get into a good medical school, but I wonder how likely it will be. I have a degree in Biology with a C average from 2004, I spent 5 years now working as a sushi chef, and I’m currently taking a Masters Program at a well known international University, or should I say, I’m ACING the program. Needless to say I’ve changed over the years, and have found a passion for what I’m doing. Would a flawless Masters Degree and years of work experience and a great MCAT score outweigh my shoddy Undergraduate performance? If not, what would it take to splash some dignity on my past performance? I’m shooting for Ivy League, despite how it may look now, how would I make this possible?

Thank you
Additional Details are that I was an Executive Chef in Copenhagen Denmark, I’m currently employed at a Microbiolgy lab, and I’m studying Cognitive Science at Lund University in Sweden.

Anything may be possible. You may get admitted into medical school if your official records demonstrate to the admissions committee stability, perseverance, capability, sincerity, and commitment. Questions that you must have answers for are as follows:

About your high school education

In what state and high school did you graduate from? Was it a high school that was rated as a rigorous one in terms of its academic standards? What was your GPA in high school? Did you participate in any extracurricular activities, clubs or sports?

About your bachelor’s degree

What university awarded you a bachelor’s degree? Was it an on-line college or university? Was it accredited by a reputable accrediting association? Did your bachelor’s degree have a number of biological and science courses in it?

About your letters of recommendation letters

Will your letters of recommendations come from well-known professionals who can give an adequate assessment of your capabilities? Are your letter writers highly respected and did they know you well?

About your test scores

Have you taken the SATs or the ACTs? What are those scores? Have you taken your MCAT test? What are those scores?

About your writing abilities

What kind of writing have you done? Did you do a senior thesis for your bachelor’s degree? Will you be able to write a good college admissions essay on any subject you choose?

Community activities

When you were in high school, did you volunteer for any agency work or community work outside of the high school?

Work experience

Will your employers say that you were a good worker? Did you miss work frequently? Was your work stressful? Did you provide the employer with ideas about how to improve the work you were doing?

Your college admission interview

Did you dress appropriately for your interview? Were you confident in your appearance and your contribution to the questions? Were you honest and sincere in your answers?

If you can do well in all of the above areas then you may be admitted to a medical college to achieve a degree in medicine.
