Tips on purchasing home gym system…?
We just recently purchased a Spirit XE150 Elliptical and are in the market to purchase a home gym for muscle toning. It was easier to get great reviews for the elliptical. I was able to get reviews from both customers and people that service or fix the machines, but home gyms are a little tricky. Our budget is 1k or lower since the elliptical were way over budget already. I weigh 120lbs 5’2 and am looking to get some muscle tone. My husband weighs currently 205lbs 5’10.. he gained 60lbs since we started dating 5yrs ago… my fault… and I feel bad… He has lost about 15lbs because of change of diet (ie more greens, salmon instead of steak, wine instead of smirnoff, sushi instead of applebee’s, etc), but he would like to tone his muscles while losing weight to avoid sagging… Any advice will be helpfull… thank you so much…

The Total Gym! I bought one a few years ago based on the recommendation of a friend of mine who was a personal trainer. He basically said it was the cheapest thing you could get that really would give you a good workout. You won’t get huge muscles using it since you can only use your body weight, but it certainly tones you.
I love my Total Gym- I brought it into NYC with me because the gym near my apartment is way too crowded and costs around $90/month.
I’m not looking to build a ton of muscle anymore- just stay toned – so the workout that the Total Gym gives you is excellent! You can really do a lot of exercises on it, and they really give you a good workout for a price that is nice and cheap.
The gym itself isn’t too light- at least 50 lbs+, so I wouldn’t get it if you can’t lift that by yourself and aren’t going to leave it out all the time. It would be a little awkward to keep under a bed, but I have mine stored to the side of my desk in my aparment, and it fits in nicely and I don’t have to move it too far when I use it. I basically see setting it up and part of my workout, so it isn’t too bad.
I also just bought the tricep dip bars and a leg kit – so basically I own the club version w/o the ability to add weights.
I’m fairly strong, but the total gym still gives me a solid work out, though I won’t get much bigger. The only problem is with legs – my own body weight is not enough to give me a good quad workout, but it is better than nothing and as long as you do high reps you still get quite tired!
