5, magic number in Japanese Food?
Why does Japanese Food (Sushi, Sashimi) or cups (in a gift set) always come in 5 pieces ? What was the history or reason behind this ?
I found one Japanese site says odd numbers can’t be divided in two. That is why the set is good for a gift (for couples or families).
Japanese people also bring a congratulatory money in odd numbers, like 30,000, 50,000 and 70,000 yen, when they attend a wedding ceremony.
But today, it is said this kind of mindset has changed. People don’t care bring 20,000 yen or 40,000 yen (the real reason is people want to save the money, I guess.).
I have never heard or seen Sushi or Sashimi were served in 5. But Japanese have a tendency to prefer odd numbers or think they are lucky numbers, like Seven Lucky Gods, 777 (Lucky 7s), Shichi-Go-San (7-5-3) etc.

I think it is cultural thing. Chinese today prefer even numbers, like 8.
