Sushi Floats

sushi floats
Color changing betta fish question?

My sister is on vacation and she has left me to take care of her male Betta fish.
Sushi (the fish) is always bored and just floats around. I research Bettas a bit and found out that sadly that is very common! :(
I have added a little blue hollow plastic dolphin that he can swim inside of and he has now been swimming around more, hiding, resting etc. he looks a lot happier. Its been 2 days since i put it in. (taking it out every now and then, such as feeding times) i have noticed little green speces on his tail.
He is in a small tank (about half a gallon)
I would love to get him to change colors to suprise my sister, how long aprox. would it take?

I can go down to the local fish store and buy a bigger tank? how do most bettas react to female guppies? toys from pet store? heaters? lights? home-made toys? etc?

Bettas change colors in response to stress, although marbled bettas actually change due to their genetics. I highly doubt you have a marble, though.

A 1/2 gallon bowl is WAY too small for a betta–2.5 gallons is the minimum size tank they should be kept it. And yes, they do love hiding places, so a few silk plants would also be a good addition. Live plants are even better.

Tank mates aen’t an option unless you had him in at least a 5-10 gallon tank.

Also, bettas are tropical, so heaters aren’t optional–they’re a requirement. They need constant water temps of around 78-80 degrees to stay happy, healthy and active.

[edit] Under NO circumstances should you EVER keep a male and female betta in the same tank, as the poster below me stated. In fact, most of the info in the post below me is wrong–bettas DO NOT live in small puddles, they live in LARGE rice paddies and swamps.

Bettas can be kept with most other fish, however, but as I said, only in bigger tanks of at least 5-10 gallons.
