Nitrogen Cycle – How long should I leave my “Raw Fish meat” in the tank?
I read about the importance of a nitrogen cycle. A several articles suggest that throwing a small piece of Raw Fish or raw shrimp into the water would help the buildup of the beneficial bacteria (those that break down ammonia and nitrites). I just threw two small pieces of salmon into my 12 gallon tank.
My question is: for how long should I leave those two pieces of salmon “sashimi” in there?? Is one day enough??
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for all of your time.

First of all, do you have any fish in your tank?
Second, how long has this tank been set up?
Third, is the salmon smoked or oily?
The answers you give to these questions will drastically determine the answer to your question. It is obvious that you really don’t understand the fundamental concept of the nitrogen cycle and probably should talk to someone who does to clear up some of your questions. This is where a really good local fish store could be helpful.
If this is a brand new tank with filters, heaters and lights working but no fish, then you can leave the raw fish in the tank until it completely decomposes and disappears. However, this the salmon is smoked or oily, you should remove it immediately. You should also remove it immediately if there are any fish in the tank or if your tank has been functioning for 3 months or more with fish in it. Finally, if you are under 14 years old, I would suggest you remove the pieces of fish no matter what.
If you do have fish in your tank, what are they, how many do you have and how large are they? How long have you had them? What kind of filter are you using and how long have you had it? Are you using gravel in the aquarium or some other type of substrate? Are there decorations? If so what do you have? Plastic or live plants, rocks, driftwood, coral, shells, ornaments made for aquariums?
