Raw Fish Allergy

Newfoundland Diet?

Does anyone know what to feed a newfoundland. I’m currently feeding IAMS large breed with about 1/4 cup cottage cheese and an egg every two days or so and I’ve heard many different things i should add that like Raw Fish??? What kind and how much and how often?????She has had some skin issues like scabs then some balding and vet thinks her food may be the problem.(allergies to her food.) I’ve switched food and used antibiotics and vet shampoo as perscribed. It has helped but not gotten rid of the problem. help….what food should I get and what should I get for her health, skin and her coat?
I have consulted my breeder and she feeds her newfys Purina Pro Plan with egg. I tried that but my newf won’t touch it!! She just smooshes the egg around her bowl with her nose, eats the egg, and leaves the rest there.

Get her onto a better quality food – Iams is not a good food, specially for a giant breed. She is obviously allergic to the food she is on, and supplements will do no good at all. Neither will antibiotics or shampoos. The food is the problem.

Check the dogfood labels, the first ingredient should be meat, not by products, and specially not corn! Newfs are not a large breed, they are a giant breed.

I don’t know where you live, so I can’t recommend a particular brand. But there are many better foods available, make sure they don’t contain corn, many dogs are allergic to it, and it is only a filler, they can’t digest it.

A good dogfood should contain all the necessary nutrition she needs, you don’t need supplements. I add some fish oil capsules for skin and coat, specially in the winter.

Edit
I live in the country and cannot get many of the feeds available. I’m feeding Purina Pro Plan Turkey with Barley, mixed with Sportmix, to get a proper balance of protein and fat. Pro Plan ranks quite well as a feed. You need a food with not more than 24% protein and about 14% fat.

You need to mix the old food with about 1/4 of the new food, and gradually increase the amount of the new food over a period of a couple of weeks. Stop adding eggs and whatever to the food, you are going to have a fussy eater, if you do, and they aren’t necessary. You are upsetting the protein-fat balance by adding things. She may not be very enthusiastic at first, but persevere. If she will not eat it at first, add a sprinkle of parmesan cheese.
